My classroom management skills improved drastically after this simple trick.

Classroom management is infinitely easier with students who have established self control, emotional regulation and an attention span. The more kids in a class without those factors, the harder it is. It’s nearly impossible to institute consequences and teach when there is a dominant group across the room that requires micromanaging. I have taught in Title I schools only, in different placement levels, and disciplinary issues are not usually an issue in advanced classes. They have established understanding of reciprocity and internalized self control, more of a growth mindset, and an understanding that their hard work brings about change and an internal locus of control. Gen Ed seems to have a large group with external locus of control. They feel victimized by consequences, blame, and have poor self reflection skills. They are looking outside for internal regulation or an excuse for not having it. It is very hard to systemize what is really a coping mindset on the student end not a lack of management or relationship skills on the teacher end. My students in those difficult classes like me and it was not an inherently disrespectful place on my end. They emphasize relationship building without recognizing that it requires two way street. A successful relationship honors boundaries for both parties. It can’t just be on the teacher side.
