My (Dr) friend went to work in A&E after a few years in other departments- I quote: “Ive seen 100 patients over the last 3 days and feel guilty even taking a break. So many sick people waiting..”

My girlfriend took an overdose yesterday after a physical argument with her mum. The overdose was a random mix of things in the medicine cabinet, maybe a 5 ibuprofen based pills, 6 paracetamol, some nytol and a half dozen SSRI. I rushed back to see her and stayed with her to make sure she was ok and recommended she drinks plenty of water as she said she felt ok and as that's all there was to hand it wasn't a life threatening dose. She felt drowsy but I said that's probably to be expected due to the Nytol... 6 paracetamol I figured would not be life threatening. She was absolutely fine this morning, went to a job interview and got the job but because she still felt drowsy and sweaty her friend recommended she went to A and E at 11am. It's now 9pm and awaiting a psychological evaluation after a blood test that came back clean. I recommended that she should have just rested and got a blood test when recovered to check for any damage however in my uneducated opinion that's not a very dangerous dose. The blood sample taken on A and E was clear yet she's been there for 10 hours now. I'm glad it's better to be safe than sorry however I'm sure a GP could have provided better care in these circumstances
