My experience with rev

This is my first time posting here so I'm REALLY sorry if this has all been said a million times before or if I accidentally broke any rules.

Okay so disclaimer: I'm not posting this to endorse Rev's practices or deflect from the very justified criticism they get, I'm just putting this out to see if anyone can get any help out of it and avoid the often arbitrary chopping block.

I'm a Revver+ and I make about 300-400 a week. This isn't a "anyone can do it!" thing, because it's often very time consuming and takes up most of my day. I only do it bc I'm a freelancer seeking full time work and need the cash. I'm definitely not out here trying to lick Rev's boots just because I've gotten very lucky with my experience. Here are some tips I can offer to try and make the best of a rough situation:

  • Be realistic about your ability and time. Try not to take on huge assignments if there's a chance you won't have the time to complete them or unclaim them. If you can help it, try not to take any chances with regards to commitment. Don't be afraid to unclaim AT ALL within the unclaim window, there's nothing to lose.
  • Don't be afraid to be picky as you try to climb up the ladder. There are lots of garbled clips out there, but you don't need to take them. Waiting out for clear clips can be tedious, but it gets easier as you move up the tiers and Revver+ has a lot of very usable audio if you can get there.
  • Favorite customers who submit clear, easy to transcribe content. Rate them five stars at the end of the job and the option to fav will come up. They'll then show up in your favorites column whenever they submit a new project and can make an easy shortcut to finding content that you can work with.
  • Hang out in "New Jobs" and regularly refresh. I gravitate towards jobs that have 0 unclaims, because ones with more unclaims are way more likely to be difficult. Being in New Jobs makes it way easier to get to these.
  • Use the text expanders. It can save a lot of time to type "ty" instead of "thank you" or "mt" instead of "maintenance." With the new guidelines saying to not use "gonna" "wanna" etc it can help to make those automatically expand to "going to" "want to" etc so even if you slip up, you're covered.
  • Read the style guide closely, natch, especially with the new rules going into effect. I have a 5 on formatting but this is LIKELY luck of the draw with graders.

Again, this isn't golden advice that's gonna fix everything. The grading can be super arbitrary, the whole system is pretty busted and I fully expect to fall out of Revver+ with one bad grade once the new metrics take effect. This is just what I do that's worked for me so far -- but again, I've been very lucky. I really hope it can be of at least some help to the people who, like me, use Rev basically because they lack many other options and are in a money bind.
