I was reading about the Amazon rainforest now putting out more carbon than it absorbs, earlier today, and I was wondering if the US could help put a dent in that if they gave all the proper land back to the tribes who are supposed to own it, on the sole condition that each maintain a forested area to act as a carbon sink.
And that sounded like a good idea, because that's a lot of land, until I remembered that some places wouldn't support trees like that, and also that land isn't just empty space; it has cities and people in it.
So I don't know how that sort of thing would work. What are the actual logistics of returning stolen land after it has cities and people and infrastructure on it?
