My family keep asking to borrow money. I'm sick and tired of it.

You aren't helping anyone if you are indirectly influencing gambling or other addictive habits. Use your intuition to determine whether the person you are lending money to is using it for beneficial purposes or for destructive purposes.

I completely understand that, yes. It's just, I was raised in a very money oriented family—and forgive me if it seems I'm trying to justify it—and my mum's argument was, and always has been, "It's none of your business what they borrow it for—so long as they give it back," and while I agree with your sentiment, I always feel that pressure and obligation to. For example, a month or so ago my mum asked to borrow money for cigarettes and when I said no, that I didn't want to enable her unhealthy habits, she called me out on my own and got defensive.

It's just incredibly difficult at times.
