My family’s Yankee Swap is so intense that we make all 30 people use the same wrapping paper so no one knows who brought what.

Part of living in society is understanding what is socially accepted within the groups of people you associate. Sometimes it is frustrating and sometimes it doesn’t make sense, but it’s necessary if you don’t want to end up alone and miserable.

The cousin should have felt the room and modified his behavior to match the rest of the family. Since everyone made a show of not taking the child’s gift, doing so was a bad idea. When everyone reacted poorly upon him taking the gift, he should have understood his mistake and returned the gift. He may have even been able to play it off like he never intended to actually take it.

Again, I understand how social circles can be frustrating. There was a game I used to play with a few friends that I quit because I couldn’t stand the “unwritten rules.”
