My father refuses to leave my bed

Former nurse here: Sorry, but these jobs are not "service". They are jobs. And not everyone who does those jobs is good at it. Some of bad at their jobs, dangerous at their jobs, unethical at their jobs, etc.

I have a friend who spent a few years in the army. He had a non-combat role in a safe country. Naturally, he was paid a salary. He considers what he did to be a job and nothing more. Except that he got to return to school after he was discharged on the GI Bill -- something not available for regular jobs. He never identifies himself as military during the various times when someone wants, for instance, everyone who is current or former military to stand up and be acknowledged.

There are tons of everyday jobs that are for more dangerous, more grueling, and demand more "sacrifice" than the jobs you mention.
