My favourite music writer

I'll try to answer your questions in order:

No, those kind of articles are not for me. Discussing social expectations about music isn't even really related to music so why would I care what some dude from Pitchfork has to say about it?

I mean I've said it elsewhere but in this era, I really see no reason for most critics (and by extension most 'journalists/writers').. There was a type where critics were gatekeepers who had access to stuff that we, the general public, didn't. Nowadays? We basically all have the same access so why should I give a single shit what some person has to think about it?

I mean it was different when writers had access to stuff that I didn't for whatever reasons (they had early review copies, geographical location, etc) and writers like Chairman Mao or Bobbito Garcia definitely influenced my tastes to a degree.. but as soon as I could get access to the same stuff they did, I stopped checking them.

So why isn't it for me? Who knows.. maybe I don't think discussing music as an abstract is a good use of my time? You want to talk genres/albums/artists and what not .. sure, I'm game to have a discussion with anyone about any of that. Discussing social expectations of music or how I'm supposed to listen to music is nightmare fuel to me. It's intellectual masturbation that barely relates to the actual music itself.

And the best things about music may not necessarily be the easiest to articulate but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. I just don't see the need to seek out someone else's articulation about how something feels to you.. if that makes sense?
