How rational it is depends on how big of a deal catching an std is to you. I'm in a similar predicament and have the same worries about herpes or other permanent stds, although the difference between us is that I don't live in a big city, so there's no temptation anyway.

Point is, I don't hook up anymore, unless a really hot guy comes my way in the future. I've decided that it's not worth it to have to tell every guy I'm interested in that I have an std. I'm sick of of being paranoid after every hookup, and something weird always happens that makes me think I caught something, like a chronic cough, colds, and shingles. Being celibate sucks, but it's nice to not have to go get tested anymore at least.
