I'm out where you are:

(good news if you're heading north someday, there's going to be an nrg charger setup in Chowchilla, I saw it yesterday on the plugshare.com map, but it's not working yet apparently)
If you right-click on a route in Google Earth you get an elevation map:

which shows you were just 600' elev gain from the pass, then it would be a nice downhill run into Valencia.
Since you were so high up, you were at no risk of being stranded -- it's all downhill back to Bakersfield (just stay under 50).
How did the Flying J charger work? Apparently they have 208V setup, was it 14-30 or 14-50 (obviously you can get a cheap "dogbone" to convert the 14-50 plug to a 14-30 plug, or I think I've read you can just clip the stupid neutral pin since it's not being used)
I've got a ClipperCreek HCS-40P sitting in my cart now, but the $600 cost kinda defeats the purpose of getting the LEAF. Think I'd just rather pay the ~$100 for the rental car . . .
