My friend is interested in diving into filmmaking, and this is his very first short. There are some rough patches throughout, but it is still the first one he’s ever made, and in my biased opinion it looks gorgeous. Apart from the actors, this film is entirely CGI

The visuals are stunning, the production values are high but the storytelling, pacing, editing needs serious work. It takes 2.5 minutes before I even see an actor. i know its hard to cut all that beautiful imagery but its not moving the story and it's taking too much time. And the waving of the torch around after finally seeing the actor? Good lord man. That's just, it looks like the direction was "wave the torch around in front of you". That's the kind of shit that makes me cringe because I should have seen that on set.

The guy has talent, not many people have that kid of control over aesthetics and CGI. He's going to be fortunate in that regard because he wont have to worry about those things nearly as much as he will have to worry about proper coverage, directing for performance and how the piece will be cutting together. I had the same problem when I was in school where visually I was able to get what I wanted but I kept stumbling with the narrative itself or matching performances across takes and in editing I'd have to try and figure out some way to cobble it together.

This dude could actually be getting paid to do music videos or VFX work right now, but if he wants to get into features or narrative filmmaking he's going to have to get back to the basics of storytelling, coverage and directing his talent.
