My friend ran over her iPhone with a lawn mower

It depends. I worked as a technician at an Apple Store for a few years, and there's a point where the device is considered BER (Beyond Economical Repair). This device would qualify for that classification.

Now, this probably wouldn't be an issue a few years ago because no one actually cared, I know I replaced at least one or two because that relationship was centric to the values we had.

Apple is currently going through mass restructuring due to new execs, and unfortunately those values, although still emphasized on the surface, are being subtly dismissed for the sake of cost savings (a side effect of this is the foundation being developed for the removal or heavy minimization of Apple's Genius Bars, expect to be redirected completely to AppleCare over the phone for service support). This isn't entirely visible yet, but the beginnings are there.

The reason I say this is so she can have realistic expectations when seeking service. Unfortunately, there's a chance she'll be denied service in today's Apple culture. I truly hope this isn't the case, however.
