My friend's situation breaks my heart.

Yeah - it fits into their worldview that it's a mental illness or just being weird or perverted. She's not going to convince them otherwise most likely - and fighting against them while they've got control over her life isn't going to be fruitful. She can't control what's going on in their mind - but can understand what's going on. Ironically - they're unable (or unwilling) to understand what's going on in her mind. Likewise they are unable to control it, but think they can. Since they don't understand her mind - all it will take is surface details to convince them otherwise and keep things to herself until she gets out from under their thumb.
