My great grandfather heading towards the mainland, island of Ulvön, northern Sweden, 1960

Located in the archipelago of the high coast of Sweden, Ulvön was a historical fishing hub-, and center. It is said that fermented herring was invented on the island, though I can not verify this claim. There are a lot of smoke houses though, and a couple of brands making their own fermented herring, still to this day.

My great grandfather, shown in the picture, was born to fishermen (like everyone else) on the island, and remained there his entire life. He worked as a captain, but had resigned during the time of the photograph.

Even though he spent his days net fishing and as a captain, he never knew how to swim. When confronted by my grandmother, he said, according to her; "if I do fall into the water, it is my time to go, for that is what God wills". A quote I find quite interesting.
