My Gustav Mahler tattoo

Since this is a Mahler post I just want to call people's attention to the newly released Mahler cycle conducted by maestro Micheal Gielen. It's part of an ongoing series of boxsets called the Gielen Edition and it's published by SWR Musik.

This collection not only includes performances of all the symphonies including a Cooke 10th, it also includes the many song cycles and a DLvdE. Having listened to the whole thing which compromises 17 discs on loop for 6 days straight I have heard everything at least 4 times over. I have to say this is hands down the best Mahler cycle available now. I haven't heard better playing in Mahler especially in the woodwinds. Gielen's tempos seem right for every work although the 6th struck me as too plodding in the first movement. The singing in the symphonies and orchestra songs ranges from above average to superb and the voices are so vividly captured.

So check it out on Spotify and other streaming services.
