My irritation about a particular religious symbol

No problem! I appreciate you pointing out the poor parts of my argument as well. Just want to have constructive discussion.

There isn't "equivalence" per se; I more so perceive it as problematic that someone feels like they can appropriate Hindu traditions(which is fine by me by the way, as long as its done respectfully), but at the same time they are unwilling to re-examine this one Hindu motif. I find that problematic; maybe that's just a me thing.

Of course, I don't expect them to walk around East Village with a swastika t-shirt. I'd just like to begin dialogue and discussion within the larger political community about how we can slowly de-stigmatize the symbol and begin to reclaim it. But it seems like people are unwilling to even do that bare minimum and that's the part that angers me. As you said, this topic is very nuanced, but a lot of people like to treat it as very black and white. They're unwilling to discuss it or try and understand it's second meaning. I don't expect overnight change at all, but I feel there's a bare minimum in terms of reconciling this symbol that hasn't quite been met. For example, take Bernie Sanders; a prominent Jew, although he doesn't practice the religion. Him giving a statement on the swastika and its history, while simultaneously acknowledging that it was used to kill millions of innocents in WW2, would really help. But this wheels us back around to the fact that Hindu Americans are an insignificant minority and so no politician would ever feel the need to address their issues in this manner. So I guess things will stay the same for a while.

Yeah, my OP was really standoffish and its getting a lot of flak from others, probably rightfully so. I feel like there's a problem within the Desi community overall of being unable to perceive nuance, whether it's in this issue or in other things we discuss on this sub. In any case I appreciate the discussion you started! have a good night dude :)
