My mama just died on 5/28/2021. How do I respond to people saying “sorry for your loss” and “my condolences”? It’s always so awkward.

When my Mom died the one response that really sank in was from a guy I only kind of knew (friend of a friend). He showed up to my house with food which took me by surprise given our relationship and he said (apologies for language): "That fucking sucks." and that was about it. After that he just let me talk about it.

To me it just came off as so real. It condensed it all down into three words. All the folks saying they would pray for me didn't help, I'm not religious. Other's saying they were thinking of me didn't help, it felt inauthentic. This dude just laid it out there and was genuine about it, and didn't say much else after that, he just let me talk about it.
