My mom has a hand rash that comes and goes every few months. It starts as a burning itch. She doesn’t have medical insurance and we don’t know how to treat it.

Not a doc.... Registered Nurse :) If it’s reallllly not possible to see a doc (even though this would be my advice here!) and this has been going on for a while, I’d say one of the first ports of call would be to see a pharmacist and possibly, depending on pharmacist’s thoughts, treat for a fungal infection (if they don’t recommend going to see a dr straight away). Please do not attempt this without medical advice- the pharmacist could take a look at it and let her know if it’d be worth buying an over the counter anti fungal cream such as clotrimazole/miconazole to see if that clears it up. If it didn’t work, she’d know it’s something more complex and would remove one diagnosis from the list of possibilities, making a doc’s job easier if she does end up going. Do you have a black light?—many fungi tend to glow under black lights (this might be an idea? Again, if anything, just to rule it out?)
