My parents flipped out on me over a vacation

Without your parent(s) - you would be nothing. Hell, you would probably be less than nothing, you'd be dead. Whoever those people are that mentored you, helped you, cared and were there for you. Those are the people you prioritize first.

The tantrum is just an emotional protective response from someone who loves his daughter, and misses her. I don't have kids yet, but I can imagine them becoming my little best friends. Like imagine you have a significant other you love - your bff for life. You live together everyday, and grow-up relying on one another for feedback, approval, and an overall sense of self-worth. Then suddenly, 18 years, or 20 years later that same bff just ups and leaves out of your life. Not forever, they're around, but it's not the same. The dynamics changed, and you know it's because they're getting older, more independent. That doesn't change how you feel.

The tantrum isn't a narcissistic move, it's actually an emotional protective response, which is natural in any caring parent-kid relationship.
