My partner saying goodbye to our goodest boy just before the veterinarian helped him rest forever.

As a veterinarian in training, this is one of the most heartbreaking I deal with.

If you were to ever find yourself in this position I implore you stay with your pet until the very end. I have seen so many carers walk out prior to their animal passing (not wanting to see it), leaving their animal alone in an alien environment with strange people (veterinary team). While we do what we can to make them comfortable we are a poor substitute for you, the most important person in their universe. The feeling of fear and abandonment is no way for these lovely creatures to go out.

As hard as it might be for you, it is 10 X harder for the animal. So please, stay with them until the very end. It makes all the difference.
