The problem is, if the camera "died" while the data was being transferred from the sensor to RAM, then the camera would have never created a file, since after the raw data is transferred it is converted to a display format, then compressed into JPEG for storage, then written to file. If it failed during the write to file step, then the file would never have been closed and would not be a valid file. So extremely unlikely this could occur, unless the phone fails in stages somehow, where it shuts down the camera sensor (and other non-essentials) in an attempt to save out any data before shutting down, in which case, something like above "could possibly" occur, but I never worked on that part of a phone before, so don't know how likely that might be.
