There can be either 2 things youre talking about here: the stars and stripes or the actual stars and bars confederate states of america naval ensign. In the case of the latter- the Confederacy existed for only four years- shorter than the Republic of Texas, the Republic of Vermont, and even the amount of time gay rights have been legal in these United States- so I'd advise you move on. In the case of the stars and stripes- regional pride can and has coexisted with national pride for centuries- why can't it exist on the Island? I don't think it's a very radical idea to hold one's hometown in high regard; and all that a flag does is shape that pride into an image. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, no?
