So my rural county has managed to avoid it until now.

A face shield is not a replacement for a mask. Period. This is primarily an indoor airborne virus. It doesn't matter where you live as long as you avoid indoors spaces you do not live in. The key part though is for everyone to wear a mask to prevent droplet and airborne transmission. Also it is not primarily transmitted through surfaces so while washing your hands is important, the strong emphasis on that early in the pandemic is not as critical as was first thought. So your heavy focus on surfaces is very out of date. Far more risk of being in the same room as an infected person. Especially if neither you nor them is wearing a mask. So the lesson hear is wearing a mask is by far the most important thing one can do.
