My son has low functioning autism and is non verbal. He made his first friend. He doesn't even hold my hand for that long.

Hi :) I have autism also and still can't touch people, but there is one person whose hand I hold :) She is my friend Ruby who is about to turn 11 (we have the same birthday its next Sunday!) when I was 6 she talked me into a pinky promise and although I was unsure I decided she would be my friend. :) I am 30 and about to be 31. (Her Mom was a volunteer who took me to the library but now we are friends)

Anyway! I was not very verbal till 19, mostly echolalia. I still have many friends that are non verbal :) Remember your child is capable of so much! The greatest difficulty I ever faced I think is people deciding me incapable and unable before giving me a try to do it. Sure sometimes I run away and decide I don't want to do things.... but then later I may decide I want to try again. I am so glad you are letting your child by what I can see, try to do things!

:) I am about to get my first hair cut in a VERY long time this coming Thursday, it has been many years. I ran away the first time but I am going to try again.
