Is mysticism, New Age, spiritualism, etc., harmful to society?

We are all free to make our own philosophical decisions. I personally am severely rationalistic and I believe that it is always better to know the truth than it is to be deluded, however enjoyable your delusions may be. The justification that you offer for mysticism, that it brings you joy and the will to live, is exactly the same justification used by theists. God brings joy and meaning to their lives. Their imaginary friend is important to them.

People who believe in mystical solutions very often fail to use the more scientific solutions that are available. Religious people substitute prayer for medical care. Your mother perhaps uses magic crystals instead of medical care (although she also has the option to use both).

Science is better than mysticism because science works. The very obvious and well established accomplishments of science (without which we could not be having this conversation in the internet) are better than the accomplishments of mysticism, which gives you warm fuzzy feelings. Jesus can also give you warm fuzzy feelings, if you believe in him. But there are more important objectives. It is more important to understand how the universe functions, than to create comforting illusions about how the universe functions.

However, even if I were to become a global dictator, able to impose my will on everybody (which is of course stupendously unlikely to happen) I would not make either religion or mysticism illegal. I still believe in freedom of thought, and that includes the freedom to believe things that are wrong. However, as global dictator I would certainly try to educate people about science and about critical thinking. Every student would read Carl Sagan's book "The Demon Haunted World" in school, and it would be carefully taught in class, to make sure that everyone understands it. Then if they still embrace mysticism, that is their choice.
