Name a movie every single person you know loves, that you hate.

It’s a recent one, but Barbarian was absolutely miserable imo. SPOILERS It started off really strong but as soon as that moment in the cave and the transition first happened, it lost all momentum and just never got it back for me. There’s also some really toothless social commentary that manages to “say” quite a bit but also nothing at all. Some of the more real and dark themes like rape and incest are handled rather haphazardly and a black homeless man appearing to help the lead only to get torn limb from limb as a punchline really put me off when I was already on the ropes with it.

The performances were really solid though! I will give it that some of it’s goofs are pretty funny (the tape measure holy shit). But for a movie containing themes of rape, incest, misogyny, gentrification, and red-lining, it has absolutely nothing of substance to say about them. The whole “victim of intense abuse has been made into an inhuman monster and must die” thing needs to go. That’s all I’ll say to avoid this comment being a full blown article, smh.

It’s just shock value in it’s purest form but really only if you’re in middle school or have never seen a horror movie before. Just a mess of a film imo. Severely overrated.
