Nashvillians don't make enough money to live in their own city

Also NY jobs generally pay more.

NYC jobs pay more but they don't pay enough relative to the cost of living there to give a comparable living situation. Average rent vs average income in Nashville might be bad now, but it's even worse for most people in NYC.

To give some personal examples, I was offered a position in NYC for $100,000. That comes out to ~$5500/mo take-home. 30% of that is $1650. There are no decent apartments for a single person in NYC for that price. The only way I'd be able to afford living in NYC is paying way more than 30% of my income for an apartment or have multiple roommates. The latter is IMO an accurate assessment given how my friends there working six figure jobs need roommates there.

Conversely in Nashville my salary dollar amount is a lot less at around $70k/yr for the same job. However, 30% of take home is about $1320/mo. It'd still be tight - I'd have to stretch my budget still to live in downtown Nashville - but it's a significantly smaller gap than NYC is.
