That nasty smug at the end

I had almost the same situation, at 17 my friend and I were driving her tank, an old Mercedes, through the city. We would have rattled around like ping pong balls if we had gotten into a big accident but a fender bender you’d barely even feel, which is exactly what happened.

Two men tried pulling out of their parallel parking spot right as we were passing by, she didn’t even feel them hit her but I did and told her to pull over. It was night and both men got out and started yelling at us about how we hit them, claiming they had already started pulling out by the time we drove up. The front left corner of their car was crushed and my friend’s tank only had two scratches starting near the middle of the passenger side door. My friend has severe anxiety, I have anxiety too but I’m also an asshole who has to challenge people when they’re wrong so I stayed calm and pointed the scratches out. It was clear they hit us because of where the scratches started and the damage to theirs was consistent with that explanation as well. During all of this a cop drove by, looked at us, then drove off, clearly not seeing an issue with two teenagers being screamed at by grown men at night. Eventually they started to back down and I told them we’ll just let insurance handle it rather than arguing, we exchanged information and that was that. Obviously my friend didn’t pay a cent and the scratches buffed out but she and her parents were forever grateful I was with her.
