Yeah, most of the United States actually has liberal cities and conservative country, but it's a little worse in Oregon than in California. The state was founded as a white heaven, constitutionally outlawing not only slave ownership, but making it illegal for black people to live there at all. It was also one of the the last states to ratify the 14th amendment (1959). Portland was the first city to (and I'm quoting the headline here) declare it's self"Jap Free" in WW2 with rounding up it's population for the internment camps. Roseburg & Medford had sundown laws that were essentially in effect until the mid-70s.

Oregon has a rather unfortunate history with race. It's gotten a little better in the state, and the countryside has loosened up a bit in terms of race relations, but I'm in an interracial marriage, and we get some pretty nasty stares and comments if we go to rodeos or livestock auctions (my extended family farms). No violence, thankfully, but there's a good reason that organizations like the Proud Boys feel like they can safely set up snipers nests to watch over their protests in Portland and not be hassled by the police.
