Look, I don't like speculating or anything and I know it's inappropriate, but in this case I feel it needs to be said to provide context for this specific situation... Barron Trump is probably autistic. There is a lot of evidence for this and of course I'm not a doctor and nobody has made a diagnosis but if you look at the clips he's in, he shows a lot of signs, and Donald Trump is an anti-vaxxer it seems because he believes they cause autism. He's tweeted about this a bunch and even mentioned it during a debate.

So, if this is the case, and I'm not saying it is but there is reason to suspect it might be, then I can understand why the family would want to stay in New York. Changing schools so suddenly can be very difficult for autistic children, I say this as the brother of an autistic person, and it could be hard to find a school that's both suitable for special needs children AND the child of a president.

Let's not assume the worst of them this time. And this 1,000,000 dollar penalty for taxpayers is already mitigated 4/10ths because Trump is forgoing his 400,000 salary... I don't think paying it would be a difficulty for them either if it came down to that.
