Prime ministers and presidents the world over are, and have been careful with their words just to make sure they don't accidentally inspire idiots to kill themselves. That's the thing. It's not a bad faith argument, it's a legitimate argument when something like this would cause the PM of any European nation to be out on his ass.

Time and again I see well-intentioned Americans reducing Trump's stupidity to something good-natured. You're giving him way too much room to breathe. Yesterday I told a Trump-supporting friend of mine to compare Trump's behaviour in this time with that of other western leaders and he was like "yeah but this is America and we don't want to be like other western countries."

Ok so apparently you want to be a country where people kill themselves because your president doesn't understand that sometimes it's smarter to say nothing. I mean that's a great cultural niche to carve out.
