Nearly 90% of Arizona voters use early ballots. Republicans would eliminate that to combat imagined fraud.

Maricopa has run mail-in-only elections in off-cycle years since 2017. But really, every local government in the state has been able to do this since 1991. Republicans started early mail-in voting for three reasons.

  • It protects local control of elections in off-cycle years. If your city or school district wants to hold polling stations, they still can. They can also elect for the county to foot the bill and run the elections for them.
  • It is cost-effective. Maricopa County saved $3 million dollars in 2021 by mailing out ballots to 21 districts and four municipalities.
  • It increases voter turnout, especially in off-cycle years when bonds and overrides need renewal. This money is significant to add funding for emergency responders, education, and infrastructure.

In my opinion, Republican voters should consider that eliminating vote-by-mail also reduces local control of elections, increases government waste, and indirectly supports defunding the police.
