Need Help

I’ve noticed that many of these comments concern speaking to a coach, which I believe is the first best individual to contact in a situation like this. However, if you do not have a coach or trust them with your situation, and this is a student whose school administration you know of, try sending an email to the administrative staff of the debaters school reporting their behavior at tournaments. If this debater competes under a school name, tournaments often count as sanctioned school field trips where school disciplinary rules still very much apply, if not at a higher standard since students represent their school off campus. HOWEVER———PROBABLY a bad idea if you anticipate this situation collapsing their debate program + hurting other members on the team at their school unless the WHOLE program really sets shitty example and you wouldn’t mind fucking them over. Like for real - racial slurs and targeted harassment probably warrant revenge.

However, it seems like your situation also calls for conjuring the guts to say “hey, shut the fuck up” to this individual, and/or admit that asking for help is not “cowardly” or “complaining.” Your comfort and confidence come first and foremost, and nobody should be telling you this kind of shit and get away with it. If you anticipate a fight or really don’t wanna speak out, just get so damn good at debate that the dubs eventually end up speaking for you.
