In an IUL it grows through interest at a guaranteed minimum rate while keeping a death benefit in the case you would pass before the policy would end. All growth is tax deferred and you can set your premiums or contribute an excess to accumulate cash value faster. Once the policy ends, usually around retirement you start taking payments from it.
