Do i need a linkedin?

"To say that Infosec Professionals shouldn't be on LinkedIn for security reasons means..."

Come on, that's just taking things to an absurd extreme. Of course it doesn't mean that. Some principles of InfoSec are confidentiality and least privilege. Why would I put my personal information online for just anybody to see?

I NEED hospitals to have access to my health information so they help me not die. I NEED to have a bank account because they'll do a much better job of securing my money. The compromise of gambling the security of my information in those institutions is outweighed by the services provided. Also, there are specific regulations they might adhere to like HIPAA and PCI.

I don't NEED to put my personal job/education history and records of professional correspondences in the hands of a private corporations. Especially since I don't know what standards they are required to adhere to. Would they face any penalties for a security breach? For now, I feel there are alternatives out there to trusting my data to unrelated corporations who profit off that information... somehow.
