We need a lot more discussion about the latest victim: 95 year old Janet D'Aleo

Even then, wild animals are more cautious around humans, and therefore more predictable. Being wounded is sometimes a death sentence for a wild animal so they will only attack when odds are in their favor, tells or no tells. Most predators will back off, because a human is not always an easy target. People in India noticed tigers attack humans silently from behind, so they started to wear masks on the back of their heads. Even tigers are cautious. Wolves around here will back off because they know humans are dangerous. Wild animals understand the rules of survival and this makes them many times more 'safe' than Mr Pibbles across the street, who only wants to give you 'a kiss'. Pit bulls don't back off nor care about self-preservation, they are over-confident balls of muscle and fur who can be triggered by the first guy who happens to sneeze.
