Do I need lots of passion for design to be a graphic designer?

I am coming up on my 20th year of my professional design career. I was a traditional artist before I went to school for graphic design. As a kid I naively thought I could inject 'passion' into my designs but found that in most situations the demands of the client did not allow for that. I am pretty decent of translating client-speak so I stuck with it anyway. I discovered what really makes the difference for me is the industry.

I'm currently working in a not-for-profit medial field. The work is just as mundane and boring as any other but at the end of the day I know that my work is helping people. That makes it a bit more satisfying that designing store junk mail, literature for an investment firm, or 1% yacht ads. Don't get me wrong if you love designing yacht ads more power to you.

Outside of work I do whatever I feel like. Maybe it's creative and maybe it's not. If that's not good enough for some trendy Manhattan firm and I don't really care. That lifestyle is not for me and I'm doing perfectly fine as an 'average' designer.
