We need a performance update.

I suspect they have built the game to run well for the most number >of players possible Judging from the complaints of performance drops, it seems they haven't. knowing the hardware of the people who play. I never heard about steam collecting hardware information, do they have a way to do that? And anyway even if they did, they wouldn't find anything they didn't already know: A large part of the playerbase comes from third world countries where most people play from internet cafes with cheap pcs.

Also, not wanting to be harsh, but the truth is if a player has no >money, Valve has little interest in them eating bandwidth playing >their free DOTA game.

I see your point, but there is a lot more to it than compendium sales, Valve would never want to lose the big communities in south america and south east asia, it would slow down the growth of the game immensely, less people would be able to start playing it casually and eventually they would move on to another game.
