Need a pump/filter for an in-ground pool

You've got, basically, 1.5" piping coming and going from the pool/equipment which means you can only put a certain amount of water through the system - meaning further that there's no need in putting really strong equipment on the pool because regardless how many horsepower you're pushing, those pipes are only going to handle about 50 gallons per minute (in a sensible fashion - meaning the velocity will still be high but not too outrageous - higher velocity is harmful to plumbing).

I would recommend a VS pump in order to save electricity (a Pentair VS pump like a SuperFlo for this sized pipe), however barring the installation of a VS, I'd go with no larger a pump than a one horsepower and couple it to a side mount 24-28" sand filter.

If it were my pool, I'd install a Pentair SuperFlo pump with a Pentair Triton TR60 side mount filter with an 1-1/2" Pentair multiport valve (for sand). I'd also look into replacing all the above ground piping with standard schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings to replace as much poly-pipe and hose clamps as I could.

You could probably get by using cheaper Hayward products, but if it were me, I'd rather pay a bit more for the Pentair and get longer lasting equipment that performs well.
