Need some questions about Third Impact answered so I can properly explain the plot to someone

  1. We're not sure. It doesn't really differ hugely from the other Evangelions. There are a few theories. The first is that it was a 'backup' lilith - they'd be able to jam the soul in there and control it. Another is that it was an attempt to create an 'ascended' being - they'd eventually just stickytape parts of Adam to it and hope for the best. There's not a huge amount of evidence for either, but the 'alternate' Lilith arises from a term Keele used in the subtitled version, I think. Been a while since I watched it. As for the impacts, Seele might or might not have needed Rei, but they wanted to return everyone to the state of a single, homogenous being that was perfect and eternal, to prevent what they saw as further 'degeneration' from their evolutionary 'peak'. And in the Manga/Video Game they were going to stick themselves into Eva-01, destroy the Lance and become as a God, but that's a different kettle of fish. Gendo was going to use 01 to re-unite himself with Yui. Wether as a vessel for That's basically his role in the entire series - incinerate the world to reunite himself with his dearly beloved wife.
  2. The fruit of knowledge is more the power of 'thought' than anything else. Man's ability to develop themselves and their world, vs the Angels, who screamed at Reality until it acquiesced. The rest, beyond that: We're not really sure. See previous.
  3. Rei reunited with Lilith, holding (presumably) a piece of Adam - or his soul - and started to reunite humanity. We don't know Exactly what Gendo's would have entailed, only the broad strokes. So we can't get into that. The difference between the impacts of Rei and Seele is that instead of locking mankind into a 'perfect' form or birthing a new 'god', Reilith/Yui/Whatever they were by the end said "Hey, SHinji. Should we rebirth the world? Destroy it? Keep it like this?".

  4. Seele had a very specific plan for their Third Impact. It varies exactly, depending on the media. Gendo did too, and it was different from what Seele wanted. And what Yui wanted was different to both. It mucked up the Seele timetable, too.

  5. Kaworu contained Adam's salvaged soul, yes. When Gendo was busy copping a feel in terminal dogma, he had the much diminished body of Adam merged into his hand. Either Kaworu's soul fled to the flesh and went dormant, or Lilith used the remnants of his mind, body and spirit to haul it up again. Or it was just Reilith picking up on forms that would make him more comfortable.

  6. We don't know. Soul salvaging isn't a well understood thing for us, but it's pretty clearly understood in the show. It might not even be Lilith's entire soul - just a tiny fragment of the whole wedged into that clone flesh.

  7. I'd guess because she was made aware, very quickly, that she was someone else. The reactions of others to who she was didn't make sense. Add in Kaworu's immediate "Oh, hello, other kind-of-but-not-really-me", and she'd likely do some soul searching. And when she did blot out Terminal Dogma, she was fairly close to Lilith physically. Might have helped.

  8. The Lance was part of Seele's plan, not Gendo's. He couldn't dispose of it without an incredibly good reason, and even then they were still pissed and moderately homicidal. Disposing of the Lance put their plans back some distance.
