Needless to say, he cried.

Sorry to highjack this post! But I would like to share something similar I did for my mom even though it's not that big of a deal compared to what you are proposing. xD

So to start off, we're not a "poor" family at all, we're actually really well off. But my parents are fun people as well as really pragmatic with their money (we are Chinese sooo, someone said we are Jews of the East....). So most things deemed as unnecessary, they won't buy.

Anyways, my mom and dad wanted to get this king sized memory foam bed that can transform into like a sofa. xD They bought this thing where you can show videos from your phone on the TV!

Anyways, we spent our family time browsing furniture stores and checked out a few really nice ones, but the one they wanted (king size, transforming, super comfy memory foam mattress and really good looking) cost 7000 dollars! Don't get me wrong they could easily afford it, but they were like "eh, it's not worth it", so they decided to leave it.

Now my dad actually paid off my student loans which was over 100 000 dollars (X_X) out of the blue a few years ago, and now I have a really well paying job. So one day after work, I went and bought the bed! I planned to have the whole thing delivered on a day they were both going to be out.

I the day off and waited for the delivery people to arrive. I wanted to pay them to move my parents' current bed and mattresses into a guest room for me, but they just did it without wanting the money! They brought the whole thing up and spent like 2 hours assembling everything. When everything was perfect they left. I set up the bedding exactly as they were and tried it.

OMG it's perfect, it's like I'm sleeping on a cloud, I actually fell asleep for like 3 hours. (needless to say I have a memory foam mattress now too....)

So that night when they came home, I just acted normal. Eventually they went to bed, and after a few minutes, my mom was like "V....? Did you do something to the bed?"

But yeah, they couldn't believe it. I could tell they were really happy. But they actually reprimanded me for making such an irresponsible purchase. But I can tell they are happy because if my Chinese parents were actually angry they'd use a much different tone, instead they were like "Ahhh you shouldn't have bought this it's so expensive and we didn't even need it etc."

But then I get on wechat, it's a messaging app Chinese people use, we have a group for our extended family and my parents and their brothers/sisters/parents always chat on there. My mom posted a photo in it and be like "yeah, so V just randomly got this... it's, so, FLUFFY!" xD

But yeah, sorry for hijacking onto your post, I just wanted to share. Just know when you do this kind of stuff, it feels super good, even years after the fact! I really hope you get to do those things one day!
