This needs to be spread out. PlayStation is making users to pay back the discount they got when upgrading membership.

I’ve never seen a company that offers multiple tiers do something similar, especially not retroactively. It’s very counterintuitive and remarkably anti-consumer. It is basically going back on a discount offered previously, in some cases years later.

The Days of Play sale starts tomorrow, and I was planning to buy another year of Plus if it goes on sale (it did in previous years). But since I intend to upgrade to Extra, I think I’ll just buy from a third party seller (presumably these count as purchases-at-full price).

For me, it’s not even so much about the money. Sure, that does matter too, but the fact that they would handle it in such an anti-consumer fashion boggles my mind. It puts stress on brand loyalty and breeds unnecessary resentment.

I do wonder if this collides with consumer protection regulations in places that have them (EU and Australia in particular).
