Nervous about using ebay. Could use some help.

Well, 300 is a lot of money.... I understand your concern. What you can do is pay a little bit more (a Buy It Now listing) for a machine, from a seller with higher positive feedback rating, and someone who has many transactions monthly. This can work in your roommates benefit, because "you get what you pay for in this world"

I would never buy a console from a fairly new user, with poor photos, that's selling other goods that look like crap also (quickly check what else they sell).

Chances are, if you buy from a seller with 100% 5 star feedback, descriptive listing, excellent photo's & regular sales - you will receive a 5 star service from them. An easy pleasant transaction, and the console & games well packaged, delivered on time, and in good working order.

So... arming you with that knowledge is protection in itself - a preventative basically.

You are protected by ebay & paypal when you use these services. If something happens, a "case" will be reviewed if you cannot work it out with the seller. And (.....) - they MAY side with the buyer, but there is no guarantee - it depends on the individual transaction & details.

If it unfortunately arrives broken, there are many possibilities how this could have happened. Postage insurance may be required, at an additional cost to you if you are concerned. Remember tho, the seller is not always to blame. I'll just say this... experienced sellers usually pack / dispatch stuff more reliably than the "mom & dad" sellers. They know you need it wrapped in plastic to prevent water damage, they know the corners need to be protected with extra packaging, in case of knocks or drops. They know you don't want to receive the manual folded & crumpled. They know to mark your goods with "Fragile" or "Top Loading Only" tape etc....

As with purchasing any second-hand goods, there are always risks. I hope it goes well for your roommate, and I hope some of this helps!
