Netflix alert: Episodes 101-113 are now full HD!

Last time I heard, Carter himself (let alone others artistically involved with the show) was not even consulted about these unauthorized HD "restorations" to a 16:9 aspect ratio that he never intended the show to be anyway. In fact, right here in a Reddit AMA last year, Carter was asked specifically for his thoughts on a Bluray featuring these 16:9 "restorations"- he answered that while he wants a Bluray, the show should be seen in 4:3, as he (and everyone else involved) intended it, not 16:9. Yes obviously, if television had been 16:9 at that time, they would've intended The X-Files to be 16:9, why not, but since TV wasn't, he understandably wasn't going to design the show (ask the directors and cinematographers to design the shots) with an as-yet-nonexistent TV format in mind. End of story- making it look 16:9 requires destroying the original shots, censoring out the top and bottom and including random material from the sides that was never supposed to be seen. So regardless of if it might even look very very pretty in some cases- it was not part of the ARTISTIC composition of the ART- do not fucking think this show is just about looking pretty. Carter, being not exactly in a David Lynch position where he can do whatever the hell he wants career-wise, may have caved, seeing the greater commercial success the Blurays will have with 16:9, but if he didn't at least insist on both formats being included on the hopefully-upcoming Bluray release, that is an unconscionable artistic crime against his own work, almost on par with making a color version of a black and white film and then pretending it was always intended to be in color. There is actually no indication Carter supports these 16:9 versions though- his only comments about them were not only negative, they were also phrased in a way that suggested he was not even consulted about the restoration. This is just FOX's baby- which is seriously problematic given the level of work needed to upgrade anything to Bluray- it involves countless artistic (not just technical) decisions that have to be re-made all over again, preferably by all the original people who made those decisions. That's the problem with Bluray and HD restorations- they CAN present the most definitive version ever, if they involve the original artists and effects people (the Twin Peaks Bluray was an example- David Lynch was deeply involved in it, and consequently the intended 4:3 versions were restored to HD) but if they are done by other parties, the results won't reflect the artist's intentions (some of the Kubrick Blurays are notorious for fudging his artistic intentions in favor of prettyness in 16:9).
