New AirPods features: automatic switching between devices, spatial audio for AirPods Pro

I'm pretty certain the AirPods only have a single speaker in each ear. They can vary the sound quality by changing the amplitude and frequency that the speakers vibrate at, so I can see how the source can be moved along the single left-to-right dimension, but how do they signal to the brain that the source is in front or behind?

Unless there has been an incredible technological breakthrough, speakers are not directional. That's why surround sound systems use 3 or more speakers to create the illusion of a 2 or 3 dimensional sound stage. It can't be done with just 2 external speakers, so what are they doing with 2 internal speakers to achieve it?
