New to all this and have a few questions

"I use DMR, because C4FM is proprietary" is one of the more confusing statements hams have gotten into the habit of saying... Is it "Proprietary" because it uses a patented vocoder? DMR uses the same one... Is it because it's not documented? Didn't stop anyone from making open source implementation of both the repeater and the terminal... Just like Motorolas patents, trademarks, and copyrights didn't stop anyone from making open source versions of DMR. Yaesu DIDN'T (as far as anyone has pointed me) patent their C4FM, while Motorola did patent DMR, which to my way of thinking, makes it "More Proprietary."

Is it simply because the Chinese ripped DMR off? If that's the definition of "Not Proprietary," I probably need to relearn English...
