In all seriousness, though, it's never to late to start with this, but it requires a lot more pre-planning than just saying you're going to collect them and going shopping. You need to decide which ones you really want, and then do some research into amiibo rarities. If you want one like Bowser, Luigi, or Peach, then you're in an ok place, since most retailers are borderline overstocked on the more common figures, and will more often than not have slightly rarer ones like Zelda, Link, Sheik, Sonic, and Megaman. If you want really rare ones like Ike, Shulk, Lucario, Marth, Pit, etc., though, you'll need to check sites like Amazon, EBay, or even foreign sites, since you're more likely to get hit by lightning three times in five minutes than you are to ever find a rare or a unicorn rare amiibo in the stores. Some of the ones that people say are common, like Kirby, Donkey Kong, Smash Bros. Yoshi, and Samus, have been discontinued and your best bet is to check the websites of retailers like Toys R Us, Best Buy, Target, etc.

When it comes getting the rarer ones, they're a good deal more expensive than the common ones. Whereas an amiibo like Link can run you $13 or so, a rarer one like Fox might run you closer to $30 or $40, and some, like Pit, Little Mac, and Villager can go for between $60 and $100+, even though they're often times Japanese or European imports. That's another thing. if you're going for rares, keep an eye out for imports, since they can often times be a good deal cheaper than their US counterparts, despite still being multiple times over the MSRP a majority of the time. One last note is that you shouldn't buy into the hype surrounding certain amiibo if they aren't a high priority for you, because that can lead to major money trouble.
