The new Canadian 2 dollar coin (toonie) glows in the dark

I used to design high speed counterfeit detection sensor systems for coins. Every time a new spiffy feature came out for high value coins, we would inevitably end up in a panic/crisis trying to get our machine designs updated to handle the changes.

Many anti-counterfeit features sound great in theory, but they make it much harder to manufacture the coins consistently. The single most important thing that the mints can do to help ensure reliable automated counterfeit detection is to MAKE THE DAMN GENUINE COINS PRECISELY AND CONSISTENTLY. The quality control tends to suck, they release bad batches that have flaws but are still considered genuine, they change alloy formulas constantly, it was a nightmare.

The counterfeits were typically made with much higher quality control and consistency, to the point where detecting counterfeits were easy, we could even identify which counterfeiter group they came from, but the genuine coins we all over the map and the machines would false-reject good coins regularly.

Whenever I see a press release for new coin variants, I'm glad that I don't have to worry about that stuff anymore.
