New Dutch law allows law enforcement to digitally wiretap your friends and family to get you

The counter-argument is that you only have nothing to hide right now.

An easy-to-understand example is Hitler's Germany. At first it didn't start out so bad--all we have to do is wear these patches? Who cares? I don't care that people know if I'm Jewish. Then eventually being Jewish is something that you desperately needed to hide.

The issue is compounded by the fact that oppressive governments come about only when they have too much power. Keeping power away from them (like the ability to have warrant-less surveillance), can only be a good thing. Power can be accumulated inch by inch, and it's difficult (or impossible) to take back once it's reached a certain point.

People might say Hitler's Germany is a bad example... "but the Nazi's were evil". Well they didn't start evil--they weren't inherently evil. They were just regular, average, every-day Germans. Normal people, just like all of us. And look how far off the rails they went. The moral of the story is that it can happen to anyone--even normal people like us--and especially if we allow the state to have unchecked power.
