New grad ICU nurse

Absolutely.

In the event that a doctor was supposed to be available, But for whatever reason can’t be. We can transpose orders.. To consider that a standard, or suggest to a new nurse “suck it up” “learn the unwritten rules”

Yea?

Maybe hazing that nurse? The only risk is to him/her.

I totally understand needing to get something done stat and a physician can’t be here within 15 minutes.

Who else is going put that order in? Let that person die?… Obviously not. It is why we have that power.

But It’s a -Huge- responsibility to take a verbal order. And it needs to be outlined as such…

….. Period. …. —————-

New nurse. Congrats!!!! How awesome.

Please verify with your leadership how you feel. Go above a charge nurse.

If you still feel like they are not doing things correctly contact your board of nursing.

If they tell you I’m an idiot, you should do what they say. I’m not a board member in your state ;p

Your job isn’t to help the doctors. You may make enemies, but you’ll eventually be respected as someone who won’t take shit. Every doctor reading this knows a nurse who will bite their f%#@ing heads off for suggesting they put orders in for them because they are “busy” or unavailable.

I would gamble that those doctors don’t think of that hardheaded nurse as a bad nurse. Maybe an asshole!!?!? But, maybe so is that doctor.

Your first obligation is always to the patient. You are their advocate. Sometimes the only one they have. And always the one they need.

Your job is to make assessments and execute physicians critical direction with the patients best interest in mind.

……./Before the institutions best interest. ……./Especially before the physicians best interest.

Doctors. Thank you for your life commitment. I respect your dedication. For all the physiology and pharmacology, You haven’t spent a dime on nursing policy or law.
